This course introduces students to the world of business.  Students will develop an understanding of the functions of business, including accounting, marketing, information technology, human resources, and production, and the importance of ethics and social responsibility.  This course builds a foundation for further studies in business and helps students develop the business knowledge and skills they will need in their everyday lives.

What will you be expected to learn? (Key Learnings)

 

In this course, you will be expected to provide evidence that you can:

 

1.      Business Fundamentals

 

  1. Explaining needs, wants, supply, demand, and different types of businesses and business ownership
  2. Outlining understanding of ethics and social responsibility in business
  3. Identifying an understanding of Canada’s role in the field of international business

 

2.      Functions of a Business

 

  1. Explaining the role of production and human resources in business
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in management, marketing, accounting, and information technology

 

3.      Finance

 

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of personal and business financial issues
  2. Describing Canadian financial institutions, their services and their operations

 

4.      Entrepreneurship

 

  1. Describing characteristics and skills associated with successful Canadian entrepreneurs and their contributions
  2. Analyzing the importance of invention and innovation in entrepreneurship

 

 

 

You will be expected to demonstrate your understanding of these key learnings through your knowledge, thinking, communication and application of the learning.

Knowledge

Emphasizes the ability to recall factual information, recognize fundamental concepts and the foundational skills of the subject/discipline.

Emphasizes the thinking skills used in thinking processes to demonstrate the student’s understanding of information they have processed.

Emphasizes the clear, precise and effective use of oral, written and visual language to communicate the student’s understanding of information and ideas

30% of your learning will be assess at the end of the course (last four weeks of the semester)through:

-Must be an independent task (evaluated individually)

-Examples of possible projects include a scrapbook, board game, portfolio

Final Evaluation:

-Approximately 1.5 hours

-Open book or closed book

-All four categories (KICA) evaluated

Your skills as a learner will be assessed in the way you demonstrate:

In every business studies course, it is vital that students be regularly assessed and given feedback on their learning skills.  These skills will include the ability to work independently, teamwork skills, organizational skills, work habits and homework completion, and initiative.  These skills will be reported separately on the report card.
